Newborn Care

We are happy to schedule a prenatal consult with expecting parents to answer all of your questions and get acquainted with our office and staff.

If you deliver your baby at Long Beach Memorial, please call our office ASAP to be sure one of our pediatricians comes to see you.

We are always accepting new patients and have same-day appointments for newborns needing follow up care after leaving the hospital.

We recommend an appointment 1 to 3 days after leaving the hospital. There are always so many questions about newborns; and we always take the time to help parents feel more comfortable with their care. Every baby is different and sometimes confusing even for the experienced parent.

We always need to discuss the following:

  • Delivery
  • Feeding and wait
  • Urination and stooling
  • Sleeping
  • Skin care and bathing
  • Jaundice
  • Vaccinations
  • Any concerns or questions you may have

After the initial appointment, your newborn should be seen frequently, especially to monitor growth. We recommend appointments at two weeks old, one month old and two months old at a minimum.

These first few months of life are so wonderful, but also some of the most challenging days and nights of parenting. Newborns don’t follow a schedule. They often sleep all day and are awake most of the night. Sleep deprivation and all of the newborn challenges are physically and emotionally exhausting. You are not alone. We are always available to support parents, offer advice, and answer questions. Ask for help from family, friends, neighbors, and your pediatrician. It does get easier and it’s worth all the struggle.
